THE ATOMIC DAWG

REVIEW

The Atomic Dawg is located at 2705 Coolidge Hwy in Berkley, MI. I've frequented the Dawg on many occasion and have never had a disappointing experience. If you crave a good dog, this is a destination you might want to try. You'll be wagging your tail each and every time.

The menu is simple but has a lot to offer. Eleven different dogs are featured, but the Dawg also offers five variety of Sausages, three styles of Burgers, 6-cheese Grilled Cheese and more. The Dawgs are always split and grilled open face down. The Atomic Dawg even makes their own cooked to order, thick sliced potato chips called, Chicago Slips. They call them thin sliced on the menu, but in reality, they're thick and crunchy. When dipped in a side of melted Lava Cheese, it becomes a reat treat. They even have a Pickle-On-A-Stick.

My favorites Dawgs are the Manhattan Dawg which is topped with sautéed sweet onions and mustard. The Frankfurt Dawg is smothered with Sauerkraut and mustard. Simple but delicious. I find that two dawgs and a side are more than satisfying. One sausage is filling on it's own.

Other classic Dawgs include the famous Chicago Dawg, and the Atomic Dawg, which can be dressed anyway you like it. However, if you want to go beyond classic, you might try a Hula Dawg or a Russian Dawg. I haven't tried these yet because I keep going back to my old favorites. But, when I do try them, I'll be sure to add a description to this post. They offer the classic and monster sized New York (Italian sausage with sautéed peppers and onions). This one is done right. There is also the Laikon, a Mid-Eastern Lamb sausage with tomatoes, onions, cucumber salad and Tzatziki sauce. That one reminds me of a Gyro. They also pull out a weekly special dawg, so keep and eye out for what's new the next time you go.

The A.D. offers several sides which include Canadian Coleslaw, Deep Fried Pickle-On-A-Stick, Chili and Bourbon Smoked Bacon. I think the only thing that's missing is a good home-style baked bean side. Baked beans are great when spread over a dog. Actually, they can call it the Weenie and Beans, Beanie Weenie, or something like that. Just get the beans on a dawg and that'd be good enough for me.

For those of you who aren't too partial to hotdogs, and just came along for the ride, burgers are an option at the A.D. It's a good size at 7 oz and is topped with your favorite trimmings. A Veggie Burger is also available for those who want to stay true to their vegetarian life-style.

Drinks include a variety of nostalgic sodas, from Boylan, Dr. Brown and Stewart's just to name a few. They also offer up nice Shakes, Malts and a Root beer Float.

The prices for the Dawgs are a bargain and average $3.45. Some are in the $4.80 to $5 range, but most level out at around three and a half bucks. All in all, this place offers up a great meal at a good value. I never feel like I'm getting cheated by the time I walk out the door. The sausages are a bit more at around $7.00, but don't worry, you'll get your money's worth. It's big enough to fill anyone's gas tank. And, if you still have room to accommodate your sweet tooth, The Atomic Dawg offers a Southern Fried Apple Pie for dessert.

I've tried all but a few of the items on the menu and have been pleased and well satisfied every time. The decor is done up in a stylish 1950's theme and reminds me of days when things were so much simpler. It's a comforting place to have a nice meal. The music is not too loud and there are no distractions that might take your attention away from the delicious dog you're about to devour.

As I understand it, The Atomic Dawg will cater your next event using a customized Air-stream. So, if you're looking for good comfort food with a classic twist, drop by the Atomic Dawg in Berkley and throw yourself a bone. You'll be glad you did.
